The Colonial Office in London took up direct administration of Malta through its Governor on the Island, Robert Laycock.....

Talks on the possible granting of Independence took place in London, the Catholic Church in Malta interdicted the Malta Labour Party leaders and supporters, and imposed mortal sin on those who voted for Labour in the 1962 general elections: more than 40,000 mortal sins were committed at one go!

The Nationalist Party in government took up negotiations for Independence and accepted British terms.

Mintoff refuted them and promised to change them as soon as Labour was elected to Government again.
